IndyCar veteran fumes over Power’s ‘disappointing’ act
Graham Rahal clashed with Will Power on the final lap of the IndyCar race at Road America.

Entering Canada Corner, Power tried to go around the outside of Rahal who defended in the braking zone.

The Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing driver appeared to drift across the nose of his Andretti Global rival and spun into the adjacent concrete wall.

Power dropped to fifth behind Chip Ganassi Racing duo Kyffin Simpson and Alex Palou as a result, but was reordered to third based on the timing of the full course caution.

“Look guys, I’m disappointed. I know you’re looking for obviously a great quote as usual, but I’m very disappointed in Will,” Rahal said.

“That’s all I’ll say. Was I blocking? Fuck yeah I was blocking. It’s the last lap. You’re allowed to. It’s not illegal.

“At the same time, he’s not on the white line. He’s got room to his left. So to run square into the back of somebody… it’s pretty disappointing. That’s all I’ll say.”

The contact between Rahal and Power went unpenalised.

Rahal was a non-finisher, classified 23rd out of 25 cars.

Speaking on the incident, Power said he did not intend to make contact with Rahal.

“I felt really bad for Graham,” Power said.

“We both braked and he jerked to the left. I just couldn’t do anything.

“I absolutely did not want to have any contact and he moved to the left. There was nothing I could do.

“I’m sure he’s very mad but when he watched the replay… I would have happily backed out if I knew he would do that, but it was just very unpredictable for me.”

A podium would have been the perfect end to the day for Rahal, who started a lowly 20th.

In a race punctuated by five cautions, Rahal and his strategist Brian Barnhart worked their way through the field to be podium contenders.

“I think the rest needs to be discussed with Will directly,” Rahal said.

“I’m just shocked how many errors he’s making this year, and he has the last handful of years. I just need to have a personal discussion about it.

“For us, I’m not so worried about the singular result here, I’m worried about the overall result of the championship.

“Another podium, or let’s say P4 at worse, puts us easily into the top 10 in points and I don’t know where we’re at right now but I’m going to get 14th or 15th. It’s a big swing.

“There is a lot of money at stake, there is a lot that goes into that. I’m just very disappointed at the end result.

“For him, he could have been calm and fought. He still had overtake left. Just line up Turn 14 and you’ve got overtake going up the hill.

“He would have known I was out of overtake, because he could have seen it coming out of the carousel, that’s why he closed.

“I had a good run in the carousel, but overtake to no overtake, so massive.

“I’m just disappointed with the quality of racing when I raced him clean all day.

“When I passed him as well as when he got by on the restart, I didn’t do anything dirty, raced him clean, gave him room. Just disappointed. That’s all I can say.”

IndyCar continues on July 6 (AEST) at Mid-Ohio.
